TowWhat Do Lifesaving Competitions Involve?Swimming

For those who have never heard of lifesaving competition it can be a bit of strange concept watching people rescue plastic dummies from the bottom of a swimming pool and people who are pretending to drown! There is so much more to it than that. Lifesaving sport has been described as “The most demanding multi-discipline sport in the world” and for good reason. This certainly isn’t swimming in your pyjamas and the following pages are a guide to the kind of events we do.

Universites compete in both University (BULSCA) and Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) competitions all around the UK,Europe and World both indoor and in open water; from pools to lakes and beaches. We offer members the chance to travel to around ten different universities across the length of the UK, from Southampton to Aberdeen and some closer to home.

Still water, pool competitions are split into two categories; incidents (Simulated Emergency Response Competitions, SERCs) and speeds. Your team consists of 4 members, and must be mixed if their results are to be included into BULSCA leagues.

Within a BULSCA competition there are usually five events:

Sometimes a boat race event is also held for fun at the end of a competition. This involves the whole team linking together in a giant tow and kicking in time to swim the fastest 25 metres.

Others argue that the main event of a University Lifesaving competition is the social afterwards. Many involve a fancy dress theme of one kind or another
