Grants

There are a number of sources of funding which you might wish to consider applying to – those we are aware of are listed below, if you have any additions, please email the Secretary (secretary@bulsca.co.uk).

Remember: very few grants will subsidise the entire cost of a project, they will usually go to a certain percentage or require you to match their contribution with participants’ own money.

Your University

Most universities offer a source of funding for innovative student organised projects, potentially through a Student Experience office, or the Alumni Office.

Your Student Union / Athletic Union

Sources of funding exist within most SUs and AUs, separate from any usual grant you might receive. These might be for certain types of projects (Sports Development / New Member involvement) or for emergencies or because your club is in financial difficulty. The best person to contact is often the Clubs / Societies administration staff or sabbatical officer.

Sponsorship

It is possible to get sponsorship for your club – anything from local restaurants to graduate employers. You will need to consider what you can offer them in return – promotional material on clothing, at events, speaking on campus and so forth. The current economic climate makes this more difficult, and lifesaving isn’t very well known, but it’s worth a try!

RLSS UK Branches

If your club is a member of the local branch, you are entitled to apply to your branch for Grants Funding – version 7 of the Grants Guidance.

National Governing Bodies (RLSS UK, SLS GB)

Funding can often be sought from the most relevant Lifesaving National Governing Body Head Office, though usually only if you are an affiliated group.

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

The RNLI has an annual grants pot, which is usually allocated under a specific funding objective (e.g. ‘Training new Open Water Safety Instructors’). Applications are usually only accepted when sent via a Lifesaving National Governing Body, and only open briefly once a year. If you are an RLSS UK Club, you should contact the Volunteer Engagement Team at River House for further guidance.

BULSCA

BULSCA itself has a grants application procedure, although distribution of funds is rare as the organisation has very little own money.
